NST’s in-depth policy

In the absence of any comprehensive, international, external approval scheme for Outdoor and Adventurous Activities, NST adopts a safety policy that seeks approval from the current best qualified, available organisation:

  • As an indication of our commitment to best practice, whilst none of our activities fall within the remit of the Adventurous Activities Licensing Authority (AALA), we comply in full with their regulations.
  • Where National Governing Bodies (NGB’s) exist, we adopt their guidelines as our minimum standards. Where this is the case, the provision and delivery of activities is subject to annual review as part of approved centre status, or where no approved scheme exists, by a suitably qualified technical advisor, external to the company.
  • Where there is no NGB we adopt the British Activity Holiday Association (BAHA) guidelines as our minimum standard. A condition of membership is BAHA to annually audit our UK based properties.
  • Where neither NGB nor BAHA guidelines exist NST own guidelines are based on current best practice.

Individual Safety Policies

The management of the safety and delivery of all the Outdoor and Adventurous Activities that NST offers to clients is contained in a safety policy and procedure overview document, which is specific to each centre.

They explain our Activity Safety Policy and include the operating procedure for each activity. This details:

  • Staff qualifications
  • Site specific training
  • Staff to pupils ratios
  • Venue

All our activities are subject to full risk assessments, which are reviewed on a regular basis in addition to any external review.
